Yes, oxygen is a waste for plants. It's hard to isolate them from oxygen mostly because they themselves produce it during photosynthesis. Sure a plant consumes oxygen during the night. But there is a surplus in the oxygen produced so the plant can consume it's own oxygen waste and leave plenty for all of us to breath! So, in the absence of Oxygen, the plant will supply plenty on its own without external help.
